Arnold Arboretum
“A visitor driving through the Arboretum will be able to obtain a general idea of the arborescent vegetation of the north temperate zone without even having leaving his carriage. While avoiding the stiff and formal lines of the conventional botanic garden, will facilitate the comprehensive study of the collections, both in their scientific and picturesque aspects.”
"Everything doesn't have to be fast growing to be rewarding"
Brad McGrath has been working at the Arboretum for over 40 years. He says it is his second home.
“You have an educated team of professionals in the field who are passionate about what they do”
Brandon, an intern, shows us the process of logistical maintenance. He says he’s been trying to locate a specific tree all day. His job is to label and identify dead trees and those in need of “surgery”.
“A perk of the job is the whole idea of the arboretum education…as grounds crew and groundskeepers, horticulturalists, landscapers we have a duty to engage with the public and basically be teachers at the same time.”
Fall is Peter’s favorite season.
This is a park for the people. Neighbors come out and walk their dogs, go for a run or a bike ride.”
Bob and John have worked at the Arboretum for 20 years. They have been the only two gardeners at the Arboretum until this year, when Harvard agreed to employ two other gardeners. Here they can be seen with AJ, they will be pulling a fallen 50-pound branch off of a tree and safely to the ground. A process that takes at least a couple hours on a good day.
“It takes an army to raise a village.”
“It’s how a public park should be managed and should be cared for and should be preserved”
